Never how it looks in my head

Why is that, anyway?

I did a thumbnail of a spaceport for the upcoming Obscure Tales story that's still in writing stage. The thumbnail led to a 9" x 4" drawing that looked... pretty good. Then, I scanned it and colored it and... I'm not happy with it. I think I need to buckle down, stop making excuses and do some life drawing. Look at how light and shade and reflection play off of different objects. Once the weather turns warmer, I'm hitting B-Ton at night and do some urban landscapes, too.

Not happy with it. What. A. Surprise.

I like it. So shush.

I think I see what you mean. It looks like a daytime shot with the sky painted black. I am not sure it is a shading issue (though it is a bit) as much as a coloration issue. Blunt those brilliant hues and place a few crosshatch shade patterns and you have a real night shot.

Just noticed the 2112 reference...perhaps it is flying to Syrinx. :D

@Snab: It's the subtleties that are lacking and I want to try to translate it into more basic comic book coloring. I remember airports as being very well-lit at night. I hit airliners.net and found this shot as a reference. I think I'll revisit it and work in some more shadows
